Philip makes sets in F, F#. G and D pitches, and separate chanters (with interchangeable stocks) in F, G, D and C. He will also repair and refurbish pipes when time permits, subject to inspection of the work required. Most of his sets are in blackwood with nickel or silver plated metalwork. He has a limited stock of antique ivory available for restoration work or for matching existing parts. He is a registered silversmith. He regards Colin Ross and Robert Reid as his principal influence, as well as John Dunn and the wind-instrument makers of the 18th century.
He has been making Northumbrian smallpipes for 16 years and these constitute about two thirds of his business. He also makes Scottish smallpipes and baroque flutes.
He is accepting orders, though delivery time is currently at least a
year. He is always happy to discuss individual requirements, such as non-standard
key arrangements, reproductions of historical styles and other special
features.
He can supply chanter reeds at £15 each.
